Chapter 12, pg 112

"All silly and gone. No bows, no spears, or fish or berries, it was all silly anyway, just a game. He could do a day, but not forever - he could not make it if they did not come for him someday."

1. Why did Brian refer to the very factors that kept him alive as 'just a game'?

2. What changed Brian's attitude at this moment in the story? Do you agree or disagree with him?

1.Brian is trying to say that he now needs to treat his life as a game.In a game you either win or lose.If he wins ,it means that he did survive through the odds. He had bows, spears, fish and berries but it just isn't enough to win.He will eventually run out of supplies of food.He may run out of food earlier than he thought because he also will compete for food with the other animals. He is thinking that he might play the "game" .Whatever he has for today he will just do.Things needed for tommorow he will just wait for tommorow to think.

2.He is losing his patient as only if someone comes and rescue him then he will win the 'game'.He felt like giving up waiting, because it looks like no one is comming.i disaggree on what is on his mind.He should be more optimistic.

1. Brian thinks that the factors that are keeping him alive is just a game. Life is just like a game, there are times you are feeling happy and times when you are feeling down. There are also times where you need to fight for food and essential things to survive. in this case, Brian is trapped on a island , stranded. He had bows, spears and food but as soon as he sees the plane, he jumps for joy, dropping all the essentials of life onto the ground and once the plane left him , he cried and pitied himself, but it is of no use to cry over spilled milk. he should not throw away his spears, bows and food when the plane flew by. By doing this, he would not have food, nor have any equipment to catch his daily supplies. But how long can he survive by doing this , not for long I think and during this period of time, he might compete with the wild for food as supplies decrease. Another reason for him treating it as a game is that Everytime another human passes by and he thinks that it is a helping hand, it flies away and its just like a game, and he's losing all the time.-------Benjamin wong (37)

Q1. Brian thought it was a game because at that point of time, his life was no different from a game-either you win or you lose.If you win this round, it does not mean you will win the next. Exactly like a lucky draw, but the only difference is that you win food and not money.
Q2.I think he is really tired, mentally. He wants to get out of this place, he hopes someone could save him but unfortunately, no one did at that time.

1.Brian treats his life as a game to him getting the bows, spears ect in the early beginning was an advantadge he thinks he has hopes to survive. While when he loses all the things he is losing a game of his life as these items are the only source of survival in the deep forest .
2. He feels hopeless and dismoralized. This will dampen his morale and that will begin to make him think that he lives in the forest for a game with no hope of survival! this will make the chance of survival for him slimmer and i disagree with his attitude!! he should always think possitive things

2.Brian is feeling hopeless and his mind is whirling up just like a whirlpool. He has nobody to fall back on when feeling down.As the days flies by, he loses his patience and just losing hope, thinking that no one will come for him .
I do not agree that what he is feeling now as by doing so, he will be just dampening his moral and instead should brighten up and look on the bright side. by doing this, he can uplift the chances of survival in the jungle.

Reflection on Hatchet Debate

Within 1 hour, 39 pupils spoke out and shared some of their thoughts on a given topic and in so doing allowed others to have insight of their own beliefs and values - think of the 'Perfect Home' discussion.

I would like to applaud the 39 individuals for bringing such a professional quality to the debate - all contributed to its success and the 'energy' that resulted from this concerted effort will be converted into greater motivation for 6 Grace.

Please take time to reflect and share your thoughts on the following:

How did this debate affect my perceptions of myself?
In what ways did the debate fit my learning style?
Has it influenced the way I perceive English and Literature?
What did the debate show us about the 'tricks' authors use to captivate the heart and mind of the reader?

I had such pleasure hosting the debate and I felt the true magic of 6 Grace.

Please post your thoughts. Thank you.
