I thought that the this debate really helped me to understand the book a lot. I thought in different ways too. I could see what the author was trying to do. At first I couldn't understand,, but as the time went by, I started to understand.

Our group members helped me a lot too. I think the debating shows us how to think deeply and how to understand the topic. I like the part when we say 'agree or disagree'. It was the most exciting part.. It was like a real debate.

I realised where I am 'standing' in this class. Next time I want to do better!!!The debating was extremely fun>_<

The debate was interesting. It made us think before answering the questions that was posed to us. When i say think,it means to think in dept in a very short time because we had to think fast as a group sometimes to share our answers and listen to each other's thoughts. And time was limited. This activity really helped us to speak up and share what we were thinking. It helped our oral. It taught me some really fantastic yet simple words to use in compositions. Those words made powerful visuals in my mind and i'm sure many other people's too!!! The debate had made us accomplish many things over a short time and i like it that way. Way better than boring oral anyway. More debates please!!=)

I enjoyed the debate alot. During the debate i realized that you must speak up if you want to grasp the opportunity, and win marks for your group. The debate is also a good way to practice listening and oral skills. The debate made my not so afraid to speak up in front of the class. Now i think literature is quite interesting and not so boring. The debate showed how using certain words, can creates a strong visual for the reader and it tells how the author made the latter feel in the situation.

The debate this time was cool but it made me realise that i am not really as good as others. It was cool to see people as quiet as yan ting speak up.It made me think that after all, there are many much more cool debators in our class and much better than me ( although i am good at argue). I must work harder to ensure that our group gain more points that we actually deserve. It is a fantastic learning style that totally fits my style because i cant learn by reading a book but i can learn if i study physically and mentally. To be frank, ever since primary 4, i hated english and science as i think it is boring, but after this debate, i felt, hey, its not as bad as i thought. It is quite fun actually.I was thinking... wow... the author really use lots of feelings to write this story and i suspected he was really in that forest before. I will try to make my composition as exciting and thrilling as the author's. And keep up your good work in debating pals!!!

In the debate,i realise that the author of the hatchet book
really choose his vocabulary really well .i must learn to be like him,
and choose my vocabulary as good as him in my composition ! In the debate i also learn why the author choose the word that he use in his books that made a nice story . Last year in 5grace, my teacher Mr khan had also set up debating classes, some of the debates are about "Are girls smarter than boys"....though it is fun , i think this years debating class is more useful as it really make me to speak up....(maybe i look as if i am not scared of talking to teachers,i am actually nervous sometimes!)i hope there will be more debate lesson so i can overcome my fear, and even better, i feel not scared of "quarelling"with my friends!Ha Ha.
I enjoyed this debate very much.I felt that I had grasped the opportunity to speak up.This debate suits my learning style as I learn by listening to other people and get ideas to answer a question.I think that authors catch readers attention by using words that can be visualised easily.I will try to apply everything that I have learnt in this debate to my school studies.I would like to thank mrs Chien very much for organising this debate.I hope that there will be more of these debates next time.

The debate was fun it made me brave to debate like my friends , i have never felt excited in debating. besides learning how to debate i also learn some facts about science of the sloshing oil and others, before the debate i kept thinking about what the debate is going to be like, i thought that it will be like a face to face debate and i was afraid of that as i am not really brave of facing another opponent. My group felt very happy upon receiving the double triple bonus especially Timothy who was right sitting beside me, i am looking forward for another exciting debate!

The debate acctualy showed a big secret of how the author could have survived and made things much more clearer to understand.
Well my liking of Literature was always there as I like adventure.Maybe a few mistakes but i dont garuntee an A yet but I think of an b+/b1.(75-70)
I think my learning style may change after awhile i may still need more training. It siuted me to the thinking of ideas instead.(i talked of course)
I felt grateful that i could acctualy take a new lead instead of sitting in the corner and the only one that had done nothing but idea man.
Taking ideas is kinda weird though nowonder why you ask us to think out of the box.

The debate is very interesting and now I think that English and Literature is very nice and not boring. It also helps me to practice my oral and thinking skills . The author used words to describe what the character was experiencing. I enjoyed it very much and hope to participate in this again.

Do You Know That Some Animals Depends On The Other For Living?
Example :The Viceroy butterfly depends on Monarch butterfly for a living. They look nearly the same and we could hardly tell which is which. It is because the Monarch butterfly is poisonous as in
its larvae state it feeds on a poisonous plant ,the clever Viceroy butterfly imitates the image of Monarch butterfly as it do not want to be eaten .This is how the Viceroy butterfly depends on Monarch butterfly for a living .This is the same for Coral snake and King snake the King snake imitates the Coral snake which is poisonous so it would not be eaten.

Even animals are clever how about us humans i think we should try to be as creative as possible ....:)

I also had debates in Mr khan's class last year. Debates help me have more creativity from what i think,i love talking too but sometimes i really have no idea. This time, the debate was in 8 groups unlike last year, there were only 2 teams paticipating, while the 'floor' was those pupils who were not paticipating in the debate. I am quite interested in literature so next year, i would most likely opt for it. This debate was about the Hatchet book. 'Tricks' that authors use may not be some kind of 'big' words, it may be some simple words like hammering and snapped open. These 'little' words that the authors used will make the reader understand what is happening in the story. I want more debates during this year^_^

The debate was like ministers protesting or agreeing with some major things. But ours is just about a story. It was quite interesting to teach literature in another way. I did not know building up our language and confidence in speaking up. This also the time that we can built up ourteam spirit. Now I think that english is quite interesting. After this debate, it change my preception of english is never enjoyable but now i think it is quite fun! I hope that there will be more debate and maybe we can wear black jackets so that we could be like 'ministers'

How did this debate affect my perceptions of myself?
In what ways did the debate fit my learning style?
Has it influenced the way I perceive English and Literature?
What did the debate show us about the 'tricks' authors use to captivate the heart and mind of the reader?

It affected me by making me not scared anymore to be the only one speaking at that moment.
The discussions of the book that made it interesting.
Yes. At first i thought that was boring and you only read and write but this is a more interesting way to learn.
The words used show a very strong way of showing how Brian felt and what he did.A way for us to put it in our essays.

Reflection on Hatchet Debate

Within 1 hour, 39 pupils spoke out and shared some of their thoughts on a given topic and in so doing allowed others to have insight of their own beliefs and values - think of the 'Perfect Home' discussion.

I would like to applaud the 39 individuals for bringing such a professional quality to the debate - all contributed to its success and the 'energy' that resulted from this concerted effort will be converted into greater motivation for 6 Grace.

Please take time to reflect and share your thoughts on the following:

How did this debate affect my perceptions of myself?
In what ways did the debate fit my learning style?
Has it influenced the way I perceive English and Literature?
What did the debate show us about the 'tricks' authors use to captivate the heart and mind of the reader?

I had such pleasure hosting the debate and I felt the true magic of 6 Grace.

Please post your thoughts. Thank you.
