Chapter 16, pg 147

".... back to square one. Just like that. A flip of some giant coin and he was the loser."

1. What does Brian mean by 'back to square one'?

2. Explain clearly what the choice of words 'the loser' tells us about the state of mind of Brian at that moment?

1)What brian meant is that he is back to where he started at first, no weapons, needed to start hunting for food again, left with his hatchet at his belt.
2)The choice of words by the author meant that Brian had lost almost all of his confidence and did not feel like doing what he had done before.

- It means that he is helpless and back to where he was started without anything, with only his knowledge of surviving in the wild. It can also mean that Brian could not do anything about it and had to start all over again.

- He was discouraged and felt like giving up. He was also in low spirits and probably clueless about what he needed to do. Even if he knew that, he might not be able to think of a way out.

Q1. Brain meant all his hardwork is gone and he had start all over again from the start which was making an arrow with a thread from his tattered old piece of windbreaker and some pitch from a to put silvers of feather on a dry willow shaft and make an arrow then haunting for wild animals in order to get food.
Q2. Brain maybe feeling very bad ashe had an unlucky day whereby all his hardwork is all gone and was thinking that why is his luck so bad.

1. Brian meant that he had to start all over again from the beginning when the plane crash took place and he had to hunt for food again with his hatchet only.

2. He lost confidence and was depressed as he did not want to live the same life of hunting for food and having to survive on his own alone.

Reflection on Hatchet Debate

Within 1 hour, 39 pupils spoke out and shared some of their thoughts on a given topic and in so doing allowed others to have insight of their own beliefs and values - think of the 'Perfect Home' discussion.

I would like to applaud the 39 individuals for bringing such a professional quality to the debate - all contributed to its success and the 'energy' that resulted from this concerted effort will be converted into greater motivation for 6 Grace.

Please take time to reflect and share your thoughts on the following:

How did this debate affect my perceptions of myself?
In what ways did the debate fit my learning style?
Has it influenced the way I perceive English and Literature?
What did the debate show us about the 'tricks' authors use to captivate the heart and mind of the reader?

I had such pleasure hosting the debate and I felt the true magic of 6 Grace.

Please post your thoughts. Thank you.
